Laura Humphrey, a wonderful teacher from Mapperley Plains Primary School, reached out to share an inspiring project her school has recently completed. Under the guidance of their fantastic Art Lead, the students explored their local city of Nottingham through the lens of art, inspired by my Nottingham cityscape illustrations. (You can check them out here.) These were the first landscapes I illustrated during my time studying at Nottingham Trent University, and living in Nottingham.

I was blown away when I saw the results and felt deeply honoured that my work sparked such creativity among these young artists. Using watercolours to create vibrant, textured backgrounds and line drawings to depict iconic Nottingham landmarks, the students truly brought their city to life.

Laura's initial email introducing this project was heartwarming. Here’s an excerpt:

"I am a teacher working at a school in Mapperley, Nottingham. Our topic this half term is all about our local area and looking at reasons to visit Nottingham. The children I teach are 7-9 years old.
Our fantastic Art Lead found your work and has created a sequence of learning for us inspired by your Nottingham city prints. The children will study your style and re-create their own artwork using what they have learnt. We are going to use watercolours to create the background and then a line drawing of an attraction/building in Nottingham.
I have ordered a set of 15 Nottingham postcards for us to use in our upcoming lessons but I also wondered if we'd be able to share any of our project outcomes with you in some way? Please don't worry if not, I just thought I'd ask.
Thank you,Laura."

The results of this project are absolutely stunning and a testament to the talent and dedication of both the students and their teachers. It’s amazing to see how art can be used as a tool to connect young minds with their local community and inspire a love for creativity and culture. I feel super honoured to have been the subject for these students. It really takes me back to when I was a student and being shaped by the enthusiasm and creativity from my tutors.

Take a look at the beautiful artwork created by these young artists!

It really warms my heart that my personal note was added to the art board!

A huge thank you to Miss Humphrey, the Mapperley Plains Art Lead, and all the budding young artists for sharing your incredible work. It’s moments like these that remind me why I do what I do. Keep creating! I don't know where I'd be if I myself didn't have amazing teachers in past sharing the same hard work, dedication and joy for art. This is why I’m excited to share that I’ll be exploring freelance opportunities in art facilitation, workshops, or speaking sessions for local schools, groups, events, and businesses. If you are interested, feel free to contact me via email at hello@jasminissaka.com to discuss any potential projects—I’d love to hear from you!
