With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is certainly in the air. And, I’ve got a lovely bit of news to share. While it’s not my own engagement (although I did recently get engaged myself!), this season, I’ve had the joy of planning another engagement party that you’re all invited to… at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre!
Last December, I had the exciting opportunity to lead the visual art delivery of The Engagement Party, a fantastic new theatre production by Oldham Coliseum Theatre. Written by Afshan D’Souza-Lodhi and directed by Amanda Huxtable, the play tells the story of Zack, a nature-loving foodie, and Sofia, a passionate city girl. Their unlikely love story begins in a chicken shop in Oldham, and as their relationship grows, so do their differences.

Guests arrive at their engagement party, but the couple themselves are nowhere to be found! As the drama unfolds, tensions rise among family and friends, with a live band and entertainment doing their best to keep the party going amid the growing chaos. Will love conquer all, or is disaster just around the corner? With an epic soundtrack and a blend of love, laughter, and drama, this immersive performance is the perfect mix of Coronation Street and Britain’s Got Talent—a show that’ll have you dancing in your seat!
When Charlie Rachwal, the Marketing director, contacted me to develop the promotional artwork for the production, I was immediately inspired after reading the synopsis. I absolutely loved the premise of the story, and funnily enough, I was preparing for my own engagement party at the same time—perfect timing!
Designing the artwork for The Engagement Party was such a rewarding creative journey. I wanted to capture the energy and vibrancy of the production while also reflecting its playful and chaotic nature. From the moment I started brainstorming, I could feel the mix of excitement and tension that runs through the story, and I aimed to bring that to life through bold visuals, lively colours, and a touch of drama. Highlighting the dynamic and different backgrounds of Zack and Sophie through strong contrasting colours and textures. Creating surreal and symbolic landscapes that hinted towards their challenging journey. But I also had to refrain from not showing too much, to keep it still exciting! If you really want to know how things creatively developed please have a look through my portfolio!

It’s been such a joy to contribute to this celebration of love and clashing cultures.
